Gatchina district a jewel of St. Petersburg environs
The guidebook you are holding in your hands is the first attempt of a separate publication about the historical and cultural treasures of our land, of bright people living here. Gatchina district is one of the largest in Leningrad region. It is located to the south of St. Petersburg. Gatchina district was established in 1927 as an administrative unit. The territory of the district is 2 864 sq. km, and the population amounts to 113,5 thousand people. The district is crossed by an international highway M-20 St. Petersburg Pskov Kiev. The vicinities of Gatchina a former residence of Russian emperors for a long time was a favorite vacation spot for the inhabitants of the capital. In the area there are old manors such as Taitsy, Belogorka, Rozhdestveno, Dylitsy, and also old dachas in the settlements of Siversky and Vyritsa. It has had a central position in the life of well-known people an ancestor of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin Abram Gannibal (he came from Cameroon), poets Kondraty Ryleyev, Apollon Maykov, artists Ivan Shishkin, Ivan Kramskoj, writers Alexey Tolstoj, Vladimir Nabokov. The district authorities carefully preserve the historical heritage. Here some museums, including such a well-known one as The stantionmasters house in the village of Vyra, and The cottage of Alexander Pushkins nurse in the village of Kobrino have been established. Ancient sepulchral barrows and boundary stones are also of interest for tourists, Russian orthodox and Ingrian Finnish lutheran churches. The district boasts such natural preserves as geological outcrops, caves, and springs containing radioactive radon. Gatchina district plays an important role in supplying the nearby St. Pepersburg with agricultural products. Its large farms grow vegetables and breed cattle and poultry; the district is also proud of its great industrial potential: some enterprises have long historical traditions; others are very young but already known. Gatchina district offers its numerous visitors excellent hotels for example the Orbita hotel in the settlement of Novy Svet.
